We waded into the sea up to our shoulders
made shallow talk for show, while waves
hummed white noise like wind shook trees
It was when I felt your foot slide
a stone to mine that I knew we
were secret agents. Geodes turned
between us & alibi spelled themselves
by touch in a braille of goosebumps

I may have thrown a tantrum at Circuit Shitty & kind of laughed maniacally at a "Customers 1st" sign & then tossed my USB drive into a random bin & exclaimed loudly I ain't buyin' shit heer! before stomping out, maybe, but the cashiers were acting like apathetic high-fivin' congregatin' no-good punkasses & I have been keeping it v. real lately.

I can't believe I'm watching Rocky 2nite. What a DickFlick. Suggestions are welcome as always, esp. comedy, with which I am hard to please. One day I will be able to say "I have seen every movie that was ever important," & I won't be lying like last time.

Speaking of DickFlicks, last night the group and I watched all three Rambo movies. We became much more manly for a few hours, but by morning it has worn off.

Comedy is a tough one. Few movies make me laugh a lot. My all-time favorite comedy is still This Is Spinal Tap, though I can imagine that some wouldn't see what the big fuss is. I just think it's brilliant. made by those A Mighty Wind and Best in Show guys.

Also Idiocracy was funny, though the first time I watched it I laughed grudgingly. The second time was lots of laffs

i've never seen a Rambo movie. tho i'd imagine it puts hair on the chest.
the Mighty Wind/Best in Show type movies are cute, but don't get me laughing very hard.

& delayed hilarity is an interesting phenomenon. when i first saw Zoolander i was SO angry at everyone who told me it was funny. but the 2nd time i saw it, i was with a friend & strangely, the film had me rolling. i still hate Ben Stiller tho. 4ever & always.

fack! yr Spinal Tap reference reminds me I need to add "Rock n Roll High School" to my list. :)

PS, I'm not joking about this: Conan the Barbarian. (not Conan the Destroyer--that one is family friendly, very stupid.)

You may very well hate it, but if someone offers, I say--accept! Try it. It's possibly the most DickFlick there is, but also, in the face of all the shit it gets from movie critics, I think it's a great film. Probably my favorite ever.

One of the best lines evar.

Boxing Helena: Possibly the WORST movie ever made. It made me wonder why I ever found Julian Sands sexy. HelEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENAAAA! Oh. shut. UP!

Comedy recommendation: Scenes From The Class Struggle In Beverly Hills: I don't even know if it's on DVD or not. Notable partly because it would've been a launchpad for Rebecca Schaeffer's career, had she not been murdered shortly after completion. It is WICKEDLY funny, IMO. If you like Wallace Shawn, he's worth the rental alone. The first time I saw it with my friend John, we SCREAMED with laughter through the whole thing.

Rocky's not a bad movie -- much better than any of the sequels. Were it to be released today, it would be considered more of an Indy/Art film, with it's focus on character and it's storyline choices. Of course, that says as much about filmmaking today as it does about this film.

Glad to see The Philadelphia Story on your list -- one of the best comedies of all time.

You may have seen some of these, but let me add:

- Jump Tomorrow (feather-light, but delightful & quirky romantic comedy)
- Dr. Strangelove (one of the blackest - and funniest - comedies ever made)
- Chasing Amy (comedy, my favorite of Kevin Smith's movies. While not without flaws, it's smart, observant and funny)

and for non-comedies
- The Lion in Winter (incredibly acted & written historical drama with K. Hepburn, O'Toole, Hopkins, and a delicious young Timothy Dalton)
- The Conformist (try to get it subtitled - I don't think they dubbed it well)

There are so many others... you have a worthy, if herculean, task in front of you.

I was dreaded watching Gone With The Wind too, and I finally made myself (all sulky on the couch muttering under my breath) and to my surprise I really loved it. All, like, 17 hours of it.

No, no, Harold and Maude is great because there was no such thing as a goth kid in 1971, especially in American movies. I think it's hard to see it now for what it was because of how ridiculously influential it it is to indie cinema and how accessible cult movies are since the video age. For years after it came out, it was still far ahead of mainstream Hollywood fare. I can't really think of another example of counterculture ideas being expressed that early outside of safely hippie-ized settings.

Dr. Strangelove only gets better as time goes on.

Lolita? Clockwork Orange?
she bedded that naive little kid & then killed herself & film glamourized it. that's what i saw. & Maude was totally hippie-fied too. i saw daisies & a hookah in that movie! ;)

& since i was born in 76, i guess i couldn't really appreciate the risk it took.

Sunset photograph is beautiful!

Comedy:

"Take the Money And Run" (early Woody Allen)

"Duck Soup" (Marx Bros.)

"Uptown Saturday Night" (Bill Cosby Sidney Poitier - 1974)

"Blazing Saddles" ( Mel Brooks )

"Adam's Rib" (Hepburn and Tracy, the chemistry was something palpable.)

"Caddyshack" (written by Bill Murray and Brian Doyle Murray?)

"Catch - 22" (just for Bob Newhart's appearance alone!)

"The Big Lebowsky" (skip directly to this one first if I make any sense at all here.)

"Stir Crazy"

"The Odd Couple" (Lemmon and Matthau) (I love this movie. Just hearing the music introduction it makes me nostaligic or something.)

"Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex" (Woody Allen)

Drama:

Neville Shute's "A Town Called Alice" was made into a pretty good drama.

I presume that you have seen "To Kill A Mockingbird"

(trailing off here...hard day. Photograph was really nice. Thanks!)

Dr. Strangelove, Spinal Tap, and Waiting for Guffman are all great comedies, that need to seen.

I think it confirms my atheism that the funniest movie ever made was Airplane. And the least funny movie ever made was Airplane 2.

I'm a big fan of Moonstruck. Did you know it was written by the writer/director of Joe Versus The Volcano? I don't care what America thinks; Joe Versus The Volcano was beautiful. Three Meg Ryans! Before she looked weird!

I second the Ducksoup suggestion above, and also found your list lacking in Woody Allen. What about Annie freakin' Hall? Hello? Is this thing on? Though my favorite Woody Allen is quite likely Love & Death. From that same period, you've got Bananas and Sleeper, which are highly watchable. Sweet & Lowdown and Everybody Says I Love You were his best ones lately (from the 90's). Regarding Bill Murray, I'm sure we've all seen Groundhog Day, right?

Regarding Dick Flicks, everyone I know with a dick is in love with the movie Fletch. Also, Glengarry Glen Ross could grow a dick on a kitchen sponge. Also, Carlitos Way is my favorite DePalma, and Casino is my favorite Scorsese.

Suggested Bill Macy triple feature:

Pleasantville

Fargo

State & Main.

I just re-watched Terry Gilliam's flick 'Brazil.' Still great. Weirdly funny, satire on government bureaucracies (since Tom Stoppard was co-writer, prolly socialism, though I've read interviews where Stoppard says even he doesn't know what it's about). Telling fact: Bobby Deniro plays a renegade appliance repairman, marked for death by the authorities.

'Blue Velvet' made me laugh like a fool and repeat lines of dialogue while disgusted theater-goers gaped in disbelief. It also taught me that yelling, "Mommy," and "Baby wants to fuck," works much better in absurdist film than during actual sex.

'A Clockwork Orange' had me on the hurl/howl line a lot, too. Reading that the rape scene was taken from an actual incident in writer Anthony Burgess' life, where soldiers during the London black-out beat him nearly to death and raped his wife, made me realize my impulse was appropriate. I just wish Kubrick had kept the ending of the original novel, where Alex learns the error of his ways. It's corny, but as is, he's just another scumbag/victim of society.

Speaking of Kubrick, same goes for 'strangelove.' If you like it, you might like Terry Southern, who wrote a lot of the film's comedic 'bits.' Blue Movie and Red Dirt Marijuana are two I liked (novel&short stories, respectvly).

Sometimes before I go to bed at night, I pray that I will dream like poetry. I don't believe in God, but I believe in something. Wash your hands, bite you nails, dress in pajamas that the right person thinks you look amazing in although everyone else secretly says in their pettyheads you are slobbysloppy. Earlydark mornings are the best for dreaming poetry. I don't do enough of it. My heart is hungry but my brain is full.

Does that make me lucky to laugh at his stuff before all the bad shit went down? I stopped being interested after "Hannah And Her Sisters".
Some hip-hop artist recently made a "mix-tape" interview with snippets of stuff Michael Jackson has said at one time or another. I don't know if he was mocking him or trying to "re-habilitate" him like David Frost tried to do with Richard Nixon. I caught it on this program out of Chicago called "Sound Opinions".

Anyway, Blazing Saddles has something for everybody. I got to re-watch once it with my prudish ex father-in-law one time visiting over at his house. He collected western movies and had somehow never seen it. It was damn-well worth it because he was one of those southern white supremacists. I merely kept at him with "...but it has Slim Pickens in it!" And Slim was in "The Cowboys" with John Wayne, grew up around Wimberley, TX. It was weird to watch him deal with Cleavon Little as the black sheriff leading the town in a battle against Hedley Lamar (not Heddie Lamar). I dunno. Was that evil of me? He was real quiet when Cleavon's character a.) got the (white) girl, Madelline Kahn. b.) was not made to look like a fool. c.) did not get killed.

If you love Gene Wilder you'll have to see this movie, and the one where he plays a Rabbi making his way across America on horseback, all the way to San Francisco (with Harrison Ford) in "The Frisco Kid".
