Rocky's not a bad movie -- much better than any of the sequels. Were it to be released today, it would be considered more of an Indy/Art film, with it's focus on character and it's storyline choices. Of course, that says as much about filmmaking today as it does about this film.
Glad to see The Philadelphia Story on your list -- one of the best comedies of all time.
You may have seen some of these, but let me add:
- Jump Tomorrow (feather-light, but delightful & quirky romantic comedy) - Dr. Strangelove (one of the blackest - and funniest - comedies ever made) - Chasing Amy (comedy, my favorite of Kevin Smith's movies. While not without flaws, it's smart, observant and funny)
and for non-comedies - The Lion in Winter (incredibly acted & written historical drama with K. Hepburn, O'Toole, Hopkins, and a delicious young Timothy Dalton) - The Conformist (try to get it subtitled - I don't think they dubbed it well)
There are so many others... you have a worthy, if herculean, task in front of you.
