An hour later I was in the staff room and he came in and started complaining about something. He complains ALL the time about how American universities are so much better, and "this would never happen in America" and how he's the only organised and competent academic here, etc. So I said (while casually eating my sandwich) "well, as I understand it, you couldn't get tenure in America. Isn't that right? No one would give you a job? Isn't that why you accepted the position here in the first place? So."
