Commons Ford is a strange place with varied landscapes, cedar forests with trails gnarly as the branches...

ground beetle
we found him on his back waving his arms all around like a televangelist

baby falls
waterfalls that zigzag over limestone canopies into wade pools

zig zag

stop and go

One of the largest batholiths (underground rock formation uncovered by erosion)
in the United States.

Tonkawa Indians believed ghost fires flickered at the top, and they heard weird
creaking and groaning, which geologists now say resulted from the rock's heating by day
and contracting in the cool night....

yes (33)
A conquistador captured by the Tonkawa described how he escaped by losing himself in the rock
area, giving rise to an Indian legend of a "pale man swallowed by a rock and reborn as one of
their own." The Indians believed he wove enchantments on the area, but he explained that the rock
wove the spells. "When I was swallowed by the rock, I joined the many spirits who enchant this
place." The first well-documented explorations of this area did not begin until 1723 when the
Spanish intensified their efforts to colonize Texas.

Ah Yeah Wow!
I like them this time as much as the other day.

What an amazing dream world.

That granite thing could be a giant wart. Or one of those ugly pale moles. Exfoliating itself up out of there. But it's beautiful.

There HAVE to be amazing caves near you. there HAVE to be.

That one upload has more spectacular images in it than I've seen in a year.

You should post some to livejournal community called landscapes. It's in my userinfo somewhere if you need a link. Bond with the Russians.

haha, the rock IS like a big beautiful hemorrhoid.
and yes, YES there are LOTS of caves here, but many you have to pay alot to get into, the others have bats (which i don't mind) and jesus KNOWS what else (rattle snakes, scorpions).

i never think to post my images to other flickr communities. i know there are tons of them, i just haven't found one yet, and my camera is cheap. i'm afraid they'll all know i'm an amateur and kick me out!

i tell a friend of mine in the same city as you about these places, i describe them as best as i can. the places you show pictures of. and she doesn't believe me that they exist. and i'm helpless to offer more details.

ugh, sans coffee i type like a chimp

it doesn't take much research to find these places. i found many of them myself on the internet. but also, i love the outdoors and am always scouting around for new exploration.
i have to admit it's scary for me to just let anyone know where places like these are. some spots i love have been choked out by overpopulation, trampling, litter. austin is growing at a disturbing rate.
yr friend can locate these places, easily if s/he's interested enough in finding them.

o my. the colors look unreal, muted yet bright. the whole scene looks synthetic! the seal pup's fur is so plush. and the great HERDS of seastars.
that is amazing!
thank you so much.

you need many days to thoroughly explore this place. it's huge and strange.
like a lava spill or i don't know. the rock is precambrian! there was almost NO life on earth back then.

most of the time i am behind the camera. there are only a couple shots of my freckle face. here is one of aaron and me. when we bang our heads together it makes lightning frm heaven!

All pretty pictures! The open field of brush gets me the most for some reason. I keep small souvenir rocks on top my wood stove from the tops of mountains I have climbed. It was kind of a mistake because they got soot on them. One was pink with florescent green lichen on it.

The pictures incite motion and narrative. Thanks for taking us along.

that sounds like an awesome rock w the lichen!
i pick up pretty ones for my daughter on my walks, when she's not with me.

the enchanted rock photos totally look like they were in motion when they were taken. the landscape is surreal. i read that it's eroding very quickly. i wonder what it will look like this time next year.

So lovely that it seems like one picture corresponds to one conversation: the way WCW's only apology for eating the plums was that they were so delicious: you turned the beetle right side up!

Hey, I'll be in Austin from Christmas Day until the Tuesday after, I've convinced my kung fu cousin to go hiking with me in Lost Pines! Are you going to be in town, want to go for another walk one day? I'm jaybthompson at google's email service.
